Hey Team,

In this video, my good friend and colleague Barb Tyers explains what Thai massage is and the benefits it brings to you as well as demonstrates some great stretches she does during a session.  Here's her explanation of the video...

"Hello my name is Barb and I am a Thai massage practitioner. Mike and I work together to help people out to lead healthier lifestyles. I have retired from years of personal training, focusing now on Thai massage and leave the training part up to Mike.

What we are talking about today is flexibility training and what Thai massage is. Of course we all spend a good 30 minutes post workout stretching, right? Not likely, it just seems to get skipped more often then not, unless one is a yoga addict. Flexibility is important for a variety of reasons, first one being function for active daily living tasks. Maintaining a healthy range of motion for the joints helps prevent injuries. I think we can all relate to the time we might have pushed it too hard and not been able to tie our shoelaces easily! Loss of range of motion is associated with pain and deterioration of tissue, our bodies need frequent blood flow throughout and stretching can accomplish this. Balance also depends on flexibility, if one side is tighter than another it affects our gait and how we do things.

Basically by stretching our muscles it helps keep the tight connective tissues healthy and our bodies limber and working well. A few factors play a part in flexibility, such as genetics, gender, age, body temperature etc. We may not all be ready for Cirque de Soliel, but we all feel better when we are looser and not knotted up with muscle tension.

I got into Thai massage as it blended what I loved most, yoga and massage. A fancy term for it is facilitated stretching, but really I help stretch people out and help increase their flexiblity. Thai massage was developed many many years ago in Thailand as a series of stretches working through pressure points along the body’s energy lines. It has also been termed “the lazy man’s yoga”, as it is similar to yoga in a way, but I do all the work for you! Long story short, it is a full body treatment to help alleviate muscle tension. Sometimes where we are feeling discomfort, such as the low back, is more due to tight hamstrings that it is a back issue. Therefore by stretching out the hamstrings and rebalancing the fascia lines of the body, the pain is alleviated. Thai massage works for all types of people, which is such a good synergy with Westcoast Fitness as they are ideal for everyone too!"
